Final Blog

You’re refection on the Flat Classroom Project?  Include good points, bad points, and how it could be improved?
1. The Flat Classroom Project was very confusing to me. I thought that having a group meant that we were going to all work together and make one video, but then later found out that we are all making a single video over the same topic. I think that the project could have been more straight forward. There was a lot of different websites and a lot of passwords and instructions to follow. I think that the best part was making the video for someone else because you know you helped them out and they could be halfway across the world. I think the worst part was the organization of the project. It was difficult to understand and there was really no set deadlines except for the final project so videos and other things were made according to when the person felt like it.

What is your favorite internet tool used in Class
2.My favorite tool used is probably the website maker or powerpoint because I like exploring things and seeing what I can make. They will also help me with other classes if I need to make a project and share it with other people.

How can the subjects talked about in class be useful in your future? In school and out of school?
3.The subjects that we talked about made me more aware of the internet and the sites we used helped open more doors than me just using google all the time. I think that I will be able to use more tools and figure out more things outside of school just from this class. I also think I will be more aware of the internet and the things I can do and discover.

What does collaboration mean to you?  How is it useful?  What are some things that get in the way when you collaborate purely online?
4.Collaboration means to me how things fit together and how well everything works together and how easy it is to understand. I think collaboration makes things more organized online and makes searching things easier. Some things that may get in the way of collaboration are viruses, computer problems, distractions, or anything that takes your focus.

How do you think the internet will affect the way you and possibly your children learn 10 to 15 years from now?
5.Learning about the internet now will help me because I will be more aware when the future and technology starts to change. It will be easier for me to adapt when all the changes come. I think that my children are going to have things a lot easier  because of all the new technology, but atleast I will have a basis to guide them in the right direction when it comes to all things on the internet.

Why is it important to cite your sources when gathering data from the internet?
6.It is important to cite your sources mainly because if you find it online, that means they are not your ideas and not facts that you found out. You would be taking credit for someone else's work if you were to take their ideas off of the internet. It is copying.

What are some ways to insure your safety on the internet? (min of 2)
7.One way to insure safety is to learn more about the internet. No what to do and what not to do when you go onto the internet. Another way to insure safety is to not go on anything you think is not right. Don't chat with people in chat rooms and don't visit any sketchy websites that you are unsure about. Then you would not be opening your doors to danger.

Your Weight on other Worlds: On this exercise, I figured out my weight on other worlds. I learned that I would weigh 243 pounds on Jupiter. I learned I would weigh the least on the moon, only weighing 17 pounds.

Your Age on Other Worlds: In this exercise, I used my current age to figure out how old I would be on other planets. I figured I would be the oldest on Mercury, being 67. I am the youngest on Pluto, being .065 years.

Squirming Palm: On this, I stared at a group of dots as they are spinning in the left direction. After 15 seconds of staring at the center dot, I looked down at my palm. My palm not only had the pattern on it, but the dots were now spinning to the right also.

Changing Illusions: In the exercise, I went through a serious of 5 illusions. They really made me think. I had to do steps like line up the lines, make the dots the same size, and a couple of other different exercises that tested my brain. At the end, the answer would be revealed and you can see how close your perception was and you learn a little bit about why your brain can play tricks on you.

Fading Dot: In this exercise I looked at a blue dot that was surrounded by a thick green circle. After staring at the dot for awhile, you can see that the dot changed from blue to green to match with the surrounding circle. This exercise hurts your eyes!

Your Age On Other Worlds: Here, I typed in my birthday and pressed calculate. From there, my age was calculated on all nine of the planets. I learned I would be 67 years old on  Mercury and  .065 years old on Pluto.

Your Weight On Other Worlds: On this site, I figured out what my weight would be on all of the planets and the moon. I figured out that I would weigh the most on Jupiter being 243.4 pounds. I would weigh the least on the moon, being only 17 pounds.

Squirming Palm: Here, I stared at a pattern for 15 seconds as it was turning to the left. After 15 seconds, I looked at my palm. Not only could I see the pattern on my palm, but it was spinning in the opposite direction also. I learned this is called the waterfall effect.

Changing Illusions: In this exercise I had to look at five different illusions. Using a dial at the bottom of each illusion, i had to test my brain in a series of steps such as making shapes appear the same size, placing the circle in the middle, and lining up sets of lines. I learned that perception is tricking your eyes during illusions.

Fading Dot: I stared at a blue dot in the center of the screen which was surrounded by a larger green circle. After moments of staring at the blue dot, it eventually turned the color green like the circle that was surrounding it. It kind of hurts your eyes though!

Flat Classroom Project

Today I found all the images  I need for my video. I began listening to more sounds and music to put in the background of my video. I plan on finishing doing my citations next class. I am working on uploading my outsourced video, which I got to download at home, and I am working on downloading my outsourced video to movie maker.

Wednesday, March 30, 2011

Today I started working on my video. I gathered pictures and started working on getting my videos converted. I got my outsourced video from my person. My video is going very well!

Flat Classroom Project

Today I gathered more information for my video and started looking at different sounds I can use in my video. I also checked and someone filled out my outsource request. I started planning and getting everything ready so I can finish my outsourced video by friday!

Flat Classroom Project Research

Today on the flat classroom project I worked out finding people who are in my group and adding them. I am trying to get in touch with people to see if they have any research done and if they would like to share it with me. I also answered people who commented on my wiki and met some new people. I did some more research on my project, but I have lots of cites and research , so I am just waiting to see if other people are going to get in touch with me. I have met two members of my group, but they have no done much yet, and I am waiting for ideas and research from them.

Wednesday, March 2, 2011

My name is Courtney! I am in group E and my top is Google. Group E is discussing how Google has affect art, leisure, and entertainment. Each aspect is very important in our everyday lives. Google has made a big impact on each because it is one of the most, if not the most, popular search engine on the Internet. Google affects art in various ways. Simply searching for "art" in Google will bring up millions of pages that have to do with art. You can find biographies about any artist and what they painted by simply typing their name into Google. Art is made easier because instead of going to an art gallery, you can see the paintings in Google Images and find out everything you need to about the painter. Google also takes away from art. If people only look up art on the Internet, then what is the point of having an art gallery or museums? Leisure is a different story because everyone spends their leisure time differently. Google is a great tool for leisure. You can put in a word of something you like to do an can come up with thousands of pages about what you like. You can quickly find something to do on Google and it will take you to the direct website. You can play games on Google and there is also many apps on Google that you can use. They offer great programs where you can make documents, presentations, and even your own IGoogle page. I think that Google is becoming more social. Each day they make new adjustments that fit people's needs. They also update their website everyday and change the Google logo around holidays and sometimes just for fun. I like websites that keep up with their page. You can search anything in your leisure time on Google. The negative side to searching things for leisure on Google is that you are sitting in front of a computer instead of doing something active. Sitting in front of the computer for a long time is not healthy for you. People spend lots of hours a day on the computer when they could be out doing other things. That is where cell phones and Internet on your cell phones help. Google on your phone is more convenient than a computer because you can access it wherever you go, and you do not need to be around a computer.Entertainment also goes along with leisure in my opinion. You can search games and videos and have access to millions of things that are entertaining to you. I like that you can search specific keywords, that way, you can look at something that you actually like and understand, and will enjoy! Google has negative and positive side effects. I think overall it is a very helpful site. I know that I use Google a lot personally and I know they have really developed and help many people, and keep improving!

Flat Classroom Project Research 2

Today I watched videos that other people have done about google. I looked at their information and sources so that my group can get ideas from those videos. I also collect more research about my topic. I met up with a friend on my ning. She commented on my discussion board. The videos were really good and I learned a lot from them! I think we are going to have more than enough research to finish the project and make it really good.

Flat Classroom Project Research

Today I started a discussion with my group members. I have only found one of them, and she has not accepted my friend request. Other than that, the two other members are unfound. I hope they will comment on the discussion board because I need their help with this project. I also began more research on my topic. I so far have a total of 6-8 sites that we can use for information to put into our final product. I also editied my wiki page in the correct format. Other than that, I searched and copied some research for future use on the project! Lastly, I linked my wiki page and my ning page.

Flat Classroom Project Research

Today, I researched more about my project and how google is affecting our civilization. I also looked up how google affects art and entertainment. I think that google has positives and negatives. I plan to research more about those next class period. I tried to get a hold of my group members again today. I could not find two of them still, and I am still waiting for the other girl in my group to accept my friend request so I left her a note on her ning. I think that we have a very good topic and if we all work together we will have a really good project. I think that google does affect us a lot and through our research and ideas we will let people know how!

Flat Classroom Project!

The first paragraph would be easier to write if I could contact any of the people in my group. I found one of the girls, but she has yet to accept my friend request for the ning. The other two people are not set up with the ning yet, and I cannot connect with them. I plan on communicating through wall posts and email or video. It would be easier if I had someone else to talk to and share my information with because I have collected some already and we could get set up and get working on our project.

I found some really good research. Of course I am researching Google and had to use Google to do my research. I had many pages that explained why Google is such a big impact on people and the world. It is easier to search for things on Google and is convenient for people. I think that I have a really good topic and there are many things about Google. Google has helped and not helped art and leisure on the Internet. I think that if I could get in touch with my other teammates then we could exchange research and show her some of the stuff I found. Who needs a newspaper when you can read everything online. News and pictures, games and leisure, research and art, are now all online.

The Whole is Flat Summaries

Chapter 1: This information makes sense to me. It is just the starting point of the globalization of being "flat." The paragraph has good and valuable information. Through people such as Jerry, we learn how to do business with other parts of the world and also about outsourcing, which is one step to flattening the world.

Chapter 2: This paragraph is very helpful. It shows how just 10 major factors has allowed our world to become flatter. All of the factors have an influence on business now and how we will be conducting business in the future. Starting with the Berlin wall, when the barriers were broken down, symbolizing the start of the globalization, and ending with steroids which have allowed our generation to function. I do agree with what Friedman thinks because he makes very good points and they are rational.

Chapter 3: I agree with Friedman for the most part in this chapter mainly because a couple of his statements are more opinionated. I think that some people still determine the ability of life through race and not through talent. People are mainly better about forgetting race, but there are a select few out there who are racists and have their opinions. I think that the start of the internet was one of the main ideas that started globalization because many people use the internet and will continue using the internet in the future because it will only get better with time. I think his opinions are reasonable though.

Chapter 4: This chapter was a little confusing to me. Friedman makes some good points, but from what I understand I do not agree with them all. I think that the lines of citizen and taxpayers and employers have not been blurred completely. I think that they are just experimenting to make working better. There is always new technology coming out that will somehow take the place of someone's job, but that is the future. If someone from a foreign country gets a job in the US, I don't see it as a big deal.

Chapter 5: I agree with Friedman in this paragraph because he ecourages better education. I think that the education of people is one of the most important things. No one can take away your education, and having the education back you up will help you to get a good job. I think that trading is still helping with globalization because each day there are new ways to trade and we are still in constant communication with distant countries through trade.

Chapter 6: I think it should be easy to tell kids what is happening. Simply say to them that the economy is not good right now and there is a high demand for high education, so it is important to go to school and get good grades so you have a chance to compete with others for a job when you are of age.

Chapter 7: I agree with Friedman because there is a high demand of a high education when you are going job hunting. Getting an education is the most important thing because many jobs require a high school diploma or a GED. I think Friedman's advice will be really helpful to parents because it will help them keep kids motivated to do well in school so they are ready for the world when they are done.

Chapter 8: I like this paragraph because there really is a competition in education. Many students do not like math and science in school. I think that there are many people who would rather have a career besides a scientist of a mathematician. I think that math and science are the basic sources for what we are going to use in life. I think that Friedman has some really good points. A lot of our idols are not who they should be. We focus more on the media than what is important. It is a hard habit to break. I think that focusing on the education will be the most helpful in the future, but many kids lose that motivation and there has to be someone there to get them back on track.

Chapter 9: I agree with Friedman because I think that he is completely right. Not a lot of people are willing to take the step forward and lead our country through the globalization. Lots of people are most comfortable where they are right now, and it is hard for them to break down those walls because they are so used to the current lifestyle. I think that the fight for education and working environments are huge. The main thing is the government. The government is really messed up. We first need someone to lead us out of the hole dug by the government before we can truly move forward into globalization.

Chapter 10: I agree that countries are competing in business. Constantly prices are changing everyday so people will come visit one store instead of another. I think that policies should be put in place. If a business survives that is wonderful, if a business fails, it fails. I think that China is the main producer of most everything that we buy. If many people are going to China to find jobs, they will be over populated. I think that there should be some sort of boundaries for businesses so there is less competition and each business can survive on its own.

Chapter 11: Outsourcing is a great way to flatten the world. If we can find simple ways to make working better, then the world will be a much better place. If workers can have a good salary and keep their jobs then the working environment will be less stressful. Little ways making working better. Even switching to having a part online business can help because most everything is done of the computer in today's world. It is simply the companies ability to adapt. If they want to stay on top, then new improvements have to be made everyday. If you want to advance in a business, you have to work and find the little things that will put you ahead of the other companies.

Chapter 12: Freedom is a big factor in flattening the world. I think that people need to recognize and explore all the factors before trying to make the world flat. Flattening the world is a hard concept to grasp for me because it truly is a lot of work and all people need to work together. I think that if we could learn to work together and step up, we could actually make the world flatter.

Chapter 13: I think that using the internet is good and bad. Many people have made things simpler by using the internet. It is an easy way to communicate with other people as well as entertainment and other things, but also computer hackers and terrorists are also online. It is scary. You have to balance the goods and the bads because with every situation there is going to be negative and positive factors.

Chapter 14: I agree with Friedman about wars. I think that there is really no need for a war. If we can work out our differences that would be great. War has to much cost that our countries and other countries cant afford.

Chapter 15: I agree with Friedman. The difference between 11/9 and 9/11 has a big influence on flattening the world. 11/9 is having positive influences that can factor flattening the world. 9/11 is one of the biggest disasters that ever came to the world, and the number represents negative influences that can get in the way of flattening the world. I think that Friedman has very good opinions in the summary.

Flattening the World

1. The Berlin Wall
a) The Berlin Wall was a symbol of flattening the world because when the wall was up, it was one community, one ecosystem, and one market,in other words a barrier. When the wall fell, it opened up to the world and became an open playing field for all.
b)About six months after the wall came down, Microsoft came out with a new program that was called The Windows Went Up, which was a big breakthrough in personal computing for people.
c) The personal computing is influential because it represented 1's and 0's on the computer that can be saved, manipulated, and shared in many ways. It also opened up more media for people.
d)Personal computing empowered people because they were more comfortable with technology and could use more media. They opened their horizons to new technological advances.
2.New Age of Connectivity
a)TimBerners-Lee created HTML.
b)HTML allowed authors to create hyperlinks and to send and share images on the computer. HTML made the computer a lot faster.
c)Netscape was the browser that started the revolution of the HTML.
d)The important outcome of the bubble was that cables could carry billions more information than the copper telephone wires.
3. Work Flow Software
a)The Work Flow Software is a program that allows people working in different states or conditions to come be able to communicate and collaborate with each other.
b)The teams of the Higglytown Heroes work in many places including Florida, London, New York, Chicago, Las Angeles, India, and San Fransisco.
4.Uploading
a) Uploading is the transmitting information from the computer to a network.
b)The Community-developed software is a program that a group of amateurs work on as a hobby. The bad thing is that there is not good service to call if you have a problem or question.
c)Blogs help flatten the world because they are like online journals. While most might be really long and personal, most blogs are about specific topics and are helpful for people and you can view it all online.
5.Outsearching
a)Outsourcing helps flatten the world because you can take your work from home and pay other people to do it for you and you do not have to worry about it. The information is easily past and it opens up many career options as well.
b)Reason number one for why India became so popular with outsourcing is because fiber optic cable was laid all over India which could hold more information billions of times better than telephone wires. The second reason is because Technology institutes in India was very beneficial in science, accounting, and math. The third reason is because India has the second largest population of English speaking people.
6.Offshoring
a)Offshoring is moving a company from the home to another country where it can be done cheaper and has lower medical costs.
b)China is affecting the flattening world because many companies move the business to China and if rival companies want to be able to compete that means they must move their companies to China also. The people in China are paid very little for their labor, so China has become the greatest manufacturing place.
c)One positive of offshoring is that the wages in China are less, so the same labor can get done for less if the company does move to China.
7.Supply-Chaining
a)The steps to supply chaining start when the cashier checks your item out, the signal is sent to Wal-Mart command centers, and there it is checked to see if more supply is in need or not and then trucks come to supply the needed items to the store.
b)The negative effect or efficiency is that Wal-Mart is in constant demand for the lowest prices. The workers may be locked overnight supplying the store and some illegal immigrants even come to work as Janitors.
c)I think that Wal-Mart is still good at keeping the prices low and they have some good competition because people are starting to look for the lowest prices possible in today's economy.
8.Insourcing
a)UPS helps small business because they are becoming more recognized and growing larger. It is easier to transport items through shipping it, and therefore you can send items anywhere in the world by the simple use of a UPS truck.
9. In-forming
a)Google helps with informing because it enables people to find webpages that are directed towards what they searched. It is simple and pulls up thousands of links about the topic.
b)Google is a risk because you can find out more about people. You can easily search yourself and find something about you. There is more personal information that can be found through google and google will pull up those lings.
10.The Steroids
a) Digital Steroids pulls all media(pictures, text, video, etc) and stores it on your computer where it can be manipulated and shared.
b)Personal steroids shift power from institutes to individuals and includes web pages.

To me, flattening the world means that we are creating new and efficient ways to communicate with people all over the world. Every day, new technology is being invented and so does the technology on the internet. I think that the Flattening the world is very beneficial because we are creating new ways to have access to the internet. Almost everything can be done over the Internet today, which is a huge step from the Internet in previous years. The lines of communication have become easier between people too. Altogether, the flattening the world helps all people.

Flat Classroom Project

I think that flattening your classroom, or having a "flat" classroom means having a student teacher interaction in the learning and educational environment, or being on the same page with your teacher, and vise-versa. All of the projects are student centered, and is an easy way to link classrooms for the same purposes and research.

Elements for the students
1) understanding of technology and the use of technology
2)opportunity to be grouped with other partners, to share opinions, explain trends, and create videos.
3)access to educational websites such as blogger, wiki, posting photos and videos, etc
4)being assessed on a criteria based rubric
5)real life deadlines, responsibility, accountability, and interdependence
6)having completed videos viewed by global judges
7)participating in a student summit, completing the project and showcasing their learning.

Time Line
1)Application Deadline: December 1
2)Online Teacher Information meeting before January 15
3)Classroom and student handshake January 15-31
4)Wiki editing and collaboration: February
5)Non-participating classrooms removed from participating: February 15
6)Video pitches and creation: March
7)Student Summits and video judging: April 1-15
8)Awards ceremony: After April 15 as determined by the project organizer

The first project that I watched was called Mobiles In Our Life and was mainly about the use of cell phones in our everyday life. I think the video was really good. One main purpose was for communication which is very important. The other main purpose addressed was for education. I think that it is unfair that they get to use their cell phones at school, but hopefully that will be us soon too. Also using cell phones for medicine is important because it allows quick and easy access to help when you are sick and doctors can communicate easier between other doctors. In urgent cases is a great time to have a cell phone because you can easily call for help. Overall, I think the video was very good, and I think they did a good job at explaining all the uses of cell phones and how they apply to our lives.

The second video I watched was called Connecting the World Online News Report and it is about the uses of the Internet and connecting it to our world. Not only social networks, but there are also many other networks out there for many purposes. The Internet is not all about facebook and myspace, and twitter. There are many websites that are out there to connect the world online. The Internet is mostly social networking, and what people many not know that there are many other websites besides facebook and myspace that can help social connect you and your friends from anywhere in the world. The video was helpful because it showed a different viewpoint of the Internet instead of my main website, facebook.

The third video I watched was called The World Wide Web. It shows what life would be like without the Web and how we use the Web for many purposes everyday. You can use different websites for reasearch, entertainment, and communication. You can connect with anyone throughout the world through the web, no matter where you are at. Emailing and research are made easier through the web, You do not have to go to the library or send your mail through the post office, now you can use google and email. The video was helpful to show the many uses of connecting people through the web.

Global Uses!

From 1996 to 2010 the Internet has paved new paths for everyone. From the uses of the Internet, to the number of users, to the countries with access, the Internet became a worldwide service that has improved the daily lives of most people. In 1996 only a select number of countries had Internet access, but nothing like we have now. There were only about 16 million users of the Internet in 1996. The growth statistics from then to now have dramatically increased as the Internet become more productive and faster. Of  course compared to recent times, the Internet in 1996 was just a small thing that shows how far technology has come since then. Some of the top websites visited in 1996 were aol.com, webcrawler.com, netscape.com, yahoo.com, and infoseek.com. These websites have undergone many changes since they were first released. Some popular websites in 2010 are myspace.com, facebook.com, google.com, ebay.com, youtube.com. Comparing the years and some of the top websites shows what kind of population grew. The more recent websites are social networks and search engines. Lots of people now have facebooks and myspaces to keep in touch with friends and have a profile that is all you own. Youtube has become very popular. Youtube not only has music videos, show videos, educational videos, and entertainment videos, but you have the ability to upload your own videos. Lots of people have been discovered on places like youtube and have gotten a head start on a good career. Google is probably one of the biggest websites used. You can search anything on that website. Google is great for answer any questions, research, school, and fun, and is great because it is a worldwide website.  The Internet was pretty boring in 1996. The web pages were very plain. The web page would get the point across and was very short to the point. The web designs were plain, usually one color and not very appealing. Some pictures were on the websites, a lot of them were like clip art figures. The Internet now is a lot more complex. The webpages have many colors and patterns. The information inlcuded in the websites is specific, and goes into great detail. The webpages are more appealing to the eye with many pictures that draw your attention. For examples the screenshots in this website: https://www.msu.edu/~karjalae/internet96.htm were very simple. The Internet was not very fast in 1996. A lot of computers had the same connection and caused the connection to become slower. The Internet now has many connections and people can create their own connections. There are certainly more connection options today then there were in 1996. People have become more technologically advanced since 1996, and so the access and browesing of the Internet has become a lot easier. Not as many communication tools were available in 1996. Email was available to people and so were chat rooms. There was nothing really like facebook or myspace. Today email has become more advanced and everyone uses email instead of the postal service. Technology has really advanced and continues to advance for the better. I think that the Internet has really helped in people's lives to make things much easier. Without the Internet, I would have had to research information in books and handwrite a paper about the information, but thanks to technology it has made my life much easier and still continues to improve!
